One year! It's been one year since I started the weekly webcomic about my larger-than-life dog, Marlo. Each week I have enjoyed scheming up Marlo's latest adventure (or misadventure as it often goes for Marlo), sitting down to flesh out the idea and then sharing it with all of you. My friend Tyler Mintz just graduated from the School of Visual Arts MFA Design program. His thesis project has quickly become more than just a school project. With the launching of the site for Foodstalk, Tyler is entering the local and sustainable food conversation as a voice to be heard. Foodstalk is a resource for people to find and support locally grown food, artisanal food makers and restaurants that use local ingredients. Tyler's beautifully illustrated chart of the New York growing seasons (pictured above) has already been picked up by Good Magazine! If this is a cause that is close to your heart, as it is to mine, please check out his site and pass it along to friends!
Now go out and eat some locally grown asparagus!

A while back I posted an inspirational quote from Chuck Close urging young creative types to simply put their heads down and create. I just came across a very similar quote by Ira Glass, host of NPR's "This American Life." Ira's quote is brilliant and really helps put the ever-evolving creative process into perspective.

Without further ado...

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through."

LCD Soundsystem ended their decade-long career with a 3 hour long blowout show at Madison Square Garden. It was stunning! I was lucky enough to be right there on the floor for the concert. These two shots were taken by my friend Genevieve.
