Books are Great: Atlas of Remote Islands

It has been a long time since I've highlighted a book and it's time to get back into it. So here we go!
Judith Schalansky's Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Never Set Foot On and Never Will jumped off the shelf at me recently. There was no hesitation in buying such a gorgeously designed and illustrated book. The subject alone is fascinating. Schalansky found 50 islands around the world that are far beyond the reach of civilization. Accompanying each of her illustrations is a short history or local tale from the island which brings the tiny speck of rock to life. There is a slightly terrifying undercurrent to many of the stories that plays with the imagination.
And the icing on the cake for me?
The book is printed in three colors. Orange, blue and black. So beautiful!

Shorpy

I'm a history nut. Plain and simple. I absolutely love pouring over old photographs and trying to wrap my mind around what life was like in the past. A few months back, I stumbled upon Shorpy which is an online archive of thousands of HiRes photographs from the 1850s to 1950s. The resolution and size of each picture is the truly stunning part of this site. Each photograph can fill the monitor, revealing tiny details that would be missed at a smaller size. It's almost as if you can walk right into the scene. The site is also updated everyday!
The above image is of Adams Square in Boston. Adams Square was one of several major commercial squares in the heart of Boston that fell victim to Urban "Renewal" in the 1950s. What you see in this picture is gone and now sits under Government Center. Oh, lack of foresight.

After the Electricity Went Out

I found this picture of my sister's host mother dancing to be incredibly beautiful. It was taken after a huge feast and after the electricity went out. The lack of power didn't stop the singing men and dancing women.
Simply put, my sister is amazing. She's an intelligent and driven young woman who is hungry to learn. She's been living and studying in Dakar, Senegal since August and will be coming home in a few short weeks. Her blog gives wonderful insight into the Sengelese culture. I've enjoyed reading her entries and witnessing her growth into an even more incredible person.

Marlo: The Beginning

Week 11
Christopher Browne
& Jeremy Browne

At a time of year when we turn our attention to family and friends and to warm holiday traditions, I though it was important to tell the story of how Marlo became a part of my family.

Working on a Special Marlo

The next three weeks of the Marlo webcomic will tell the story of Marlo's life. While he lives like a king now, Marlo had an incredibly rough beginning as a stray on the streets of North Philly. He was a skinny little dog covered in scabs and scratches by the time he came into my life.
I've really been enjoying the challenge of weaving together a beautiful and moving narrative told only in pictures. A special thank you to my very talented brother Jeremy who is helping me flesh the story out.
